The accompanying data and instruction is a companion to "A Bridge Between Two Worlds: The Political and Economic Geography of SNCC’s Friends Network." This README.txt and accompanying data file contains the necessary data and instructions to reproduce the results given in the above article. SOFTWARE: The maps were constructed with ArcGIS Desktop (https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/). See instructions below for specific tools used. DATA: Three excel files - SNCC National Office; SNCC Friends; and SNCC Projects - contain the geographical location (address) of SNCC Friend Chapters and Project locations (for the years 1960-1963). The fourth excel file contains the census records. NOTE: Population count percentages were determined by dividing the number of “nonwhite” county residents by the total population INSTRUCTIONS: For map 1: First, geocode excel files on SNCC Friends Project and Friend locations (https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/10.3/guide-books/geocoding/a-quick-tour-of-geocoding.htm). Then, in a new map, add data. In the attribute table for each file (https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/latest/manage-data/tables/a-quick-tour-of-tables-and-attribute-information.htm), add two new fields (X1; Y1; double) and calculate. In the new field, add the XY coordinates of Atlanta. Once complete, run XYLine (https://support.esri.com/en/technical-article/000012092). For Map 2: First, add 1960 Shapefile from IPUMS (https://usa.ipums.org/usa/volii/boundaries.shtml). Then, add 1960 Census data table directly to map and do a Spatial Join Shapefile and data (https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/10.3/manage-data/tables/joining-attributes-in-one-table-to-another.htm). Right-click on the US County Shape file and “export data.” Add the new exported data to the map. Then run grouping analysis using the four categories of the census data (https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/10.3/tools/spatial-statistics-toolbox/grouping-analysis.htm). For Map 3: First, add XY Lines (from Map 1), then merge (https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/10.3/tools/data-management-toolbox/merge.htm). Add new merged XY Line and Grouping Analysis Map. As part of this process, I also added the geocoded locations from Map 1 and did a Spatial Join.
