Email me at jswisher@nd.edu Dataset: SLV Newspaper Data Summary: This dataset contains image and textual data for newspaper articles used for textual and spatial analysis in "A Tale of Three Valleys: Text Mining, Spatial Analysis, and the Contested Geographies of Colorado and New Mexico’s San Luis Valley" Preparation: All files containing textual copies of newspaper articles prepared by hand and cleaned by Jacob Swisher. All files containing newspaper images clipped by Jacob Swisher from images hosted by coloradohistoricnewspapers.org Use Instructions: Users will find all newspaper image files in the "SLV Newspaper Data\SLV Newspaper Images". All newspaper text files can be found in "SLV Newspaper Data\SLV Newspaper Articles OCR". All files with "OCR" in the file name are prepared for batch analysis in Voyant Tools and are word-searchable. File Naming Conventions: All files use the following naming convention: "Publication Date (YYYY.MM.DD).Newspaper Name.Newspaper Location.Article Title". Files in "SLV Newspaper Data\SLV Newspaper Articles OCR" contain one of the following tags at the end of the file name: "OCR" - indicates complete textual copy of article image "OCR.NC" - indicates incomplete textual copy of article image due to absence or illegibility of text in article image "OCRPartial" - indicates incomplete textual copy of article image that contains only relevant paragraph or paragraphs. In general, this is approach was only applied to very lengthy articles at the discretion of the author. Users may consult the full article in "SLV Newspaper Data\SLV Newspaper Images". "OCRSwitch" - indicates the replacement of "San Luis Park" with "San Luis Valley" to prepare data for analysis in Voyant Tools. The two terms were historically interchangeable, though authors used "San Luis Valley" with much greater frequency. Use Limitations: This dataset only reflects records digitized by coloradohistoricnewspapers.org and is not a complete representation of articles referencing the San Luis Valley during the period covered by the associated article.
